- Arrive at the Digital Exhibition Center. Collect your tickets and watch The Thousand-Year Dunhuang and Radiant Dunhuang.
- 09:30 – 10:00 | Shuttle Bus to the Caves
- Take the 15-minute scenic shuttle bus ride from the center to the actual cave area.

Step-by-Step Breakdown & Insider Tips
Step 1: The Theater Strategy
Enter through the “Exhibition 1 Entrance” when gates open. You will watch two digital movies back-to-back. For the first standard movie, sit near the back rows. For the second dome-screen movie (Radiant Dunhuang), sit in the middle-to-back rows for the best visual perspective. Sitting here also positions you perfectly to exit the theater first and beat the crowd to the shuttle buses.
Step 2: The Shuttle Bus Ride
Board the scenic shuttle bus for a 15-minute ride to the caves. Try to sit on the right side of the bus to catch a sweeping panoramic view of the Mogao Caves complex against the desert. If you manage to grab a seat in the very first row, you will get a stunning view of the highway cutting straight into the vast sand dunes.
Step 3: The Guided Tour Protocol
After stepping off the bus, line up at the cave entrance. Staff will divide visitors into groups of 30 and distribute specialized wireless headsets. These headsets are strictly tuned to your specific guide’s microphone frequency. Do not wander away from your group, or you will lose the audio signal completely.
Step 4: The Cave Route & The Grand Buddha
The guided tour lasts 80 to 90 minutes. Your guide will lead you through a randomized selection of 8 standard caves.
- Highly Recommended Route Example: Caves 29, 329, 335, 16 & 17 (The absolute must-see Library Cave), 292, 61, and 79.
- The tour officially ends at the majestic Cave 96 (The Nine-Story Building), where the guide will collect your headsets. Take your time to complete a traditional walking ritual around the Grand Buddha.
Step 5: Upgrading to Special Caves
Once you exit the standard route, you can take photos outside. If you want to see the exclusive, paid Special Caves, look for the ticket window located right next to the main cave entrance.
Crucial Warning: Do not take the return shuttle back to the visitor center before buying special tickets. Once you board the return bus, your standard ticket becomes completely invalid, and you cannot re-enter the cave area.
Step 6: Replicas & Exhibition Center
While the Mogao Art Museum is temporarily closed for roof maintenance, the Dunhuang Research Academy Exhibition Center is fully open. Head inside to explore the first floor, which features eight meticulously crafted 1:1 replica caves. Unlike the real caves where photography is strictly banned, you are fully allowed to take photos of these stunning replicas.
